Converts RS-232 to an opto-isolated RS-422/RS-485 line

An isolation interface converter that turns a single-ended RS-232 signal into a balanced RS-422 or RS-485 signal. The photoelectric isolator and fast TVS circuit keep the line clear of lightning, ESD and common-mode interference. It serves point-to-point and multipoint industrial communication.

Technical detail

Operating modeRuns asynchronous half or full duplex. On the RS-485 side it supports two-wire half-duplex communication.

Direction controlIt detects the data direction on its own and turns the line around by itself. No handshake signal is needed, and RS-232 based software runs unchanged.

ProtectionIt carries 600 W lightning and surge protection on the RS-232 interface and 1000 W per line on the RS-422/RS-485 interface.

ConnectionThe RS-422/RS-485 end connects through a 4-pin terminal block or an RJ11 phone socket. It runs over twisted-pair or shielded cable.

Power and indicatorsThe RS-232 side draws power from the serial port signal and the RS-422/RS-485 side from a power converter. Two indicator lights show TXD and RXD.

Housing and environmentThe plastic housing measures 80 mm x 55 mm x 21 mm and weighs 0.1 kg. It operates in 5% to 95% relative humidity.
